The Feleesi

The deserts surrounding the arcane city of Kalasara are a barren sun scorched wasteland, but it was not always this way. Once this land was a fertile paradise home a people known as the Feleesi, a strong and intelligent cat-like people. In a time before humans had even discovered the plow, the Feleesi had already built a mighty civilization. Unlike humans, the Feleesi embraced magic and made it a central part of their culture.

Attacked by Feleesi Nomads

The city states that made up the Feleesi civilization were constantly at war and new alliances and rivalries would form and dissolve as each state vied for power in the region. This culminated in the war of the magi, named for the two powerful mages at the head of the two city states that were the central powers in the conflict. These two city states were Tridena and Avaris. Tridena was an underwater city whose sole entrance was a tower jutting out of the sea, while the city of Avaris was carved from the rocky caves in the volcanic mountains of the region.

During the first years of the war, several cities were burned to the ground, leaving no survivors. By the fifth year, the city of Tridena was under siege and it seemed that Avaris would be successful. However a powerful archmage had developed devastating new spell that, when cast, would produce a poisonous cloud which would kill nearly any living thing that it touched, save for the Feleesi. They would be transformed into uncontrollable bloodthirsty monsters and anyone bitten by these creatures would gradually transform into rageful killing machines themselves.

The mage taught the spell to his most gifted apprentice who fled the city under the cover of darkness. Eventually, the mage’s apprentice reached the city of Avaris where he activated the spell, thereby bringing devastation to the once great city and ending the war. However, in his haste to win the war, the archmage failed to account for the repercussions of the spell. Over time the winds blew the noxious fumes toward the city of Tridena, which soon succumbed to the same fate as its rival.

While a some Feleesi were immune to the effects of the poison and managed to flee to the countryside, their society was never able to recover. The descendants of this once great civilization now wander the wasteland in scattered nomadic tribes. While some of these tribes are friendly to humans, others will attack outsiders on sight and care must be taken when encountering a group Feleesi while exploring the wastes.
